The increase was driven by the memory sales

Global semiconductors sales increased 1.4% in February 2013 to $23.25bn compared to the sales of $22.93bn in February 2012, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

In January 2013, global semiconductors sales reached $24.17bn, 3.8% more than the sales recorded in February.

SIA president and CEO Brian Toohey said that despite persistent economic uncertainty, the global semiconductor industry is off to a promising start in 2013 led by strength in memory sales and is ahead of last year's pace.

"To help spur stronger growth, Congress and the Administration should invest in basic research to boost American innovation, reform the high-skilled immigration system to welcome the top scientific minds from around the world, and modify the tax system so businesses can expand, invest and hire new workers," Toohey added.

Geographically, Asia Pacific recorded a year-over-year sales growth of 6.7%, 1.6% increase in the Americas, 1.5% decrease in Europe and a 15.7% decline in Japan.

Compared to January, sales in Europe rose by 1.4%, decreased by 3.6% in Asia Pacific, while Japan and the Americas recorded declines of 5% and 6.2%, respectively.
